4 Steps to Recession Proof Your Salon
Mar 28, 2023Let’s talk about the elephant in the room… Running a salon in today’s economy is SCARY. We’re all worried about an impending recession, watching living costs soar, and seeing clients take out extensions. This sh*t is not a joke.
As the head of your salon, it is VITAL that you keep your head on straight, remain optimistic, and tackle these issues with a calm, strategic approach rather than the panic (hopefully) hidden under your cool demeanor.😅
Believe it or not, I’ve kept my salons afloat through some pretty crazy financial fluctuations, plus retained my stylists through the pandemic, so I happen to know a thing or two about surviving catastrophe. When it comes to recession proofing your salon, I’ve got some quick advice.
1. Focus on building a loyal customer base by providing excellent customer service, personalized experiences, and loyalty programs. No matter the situation, an incredible customer experience will outweigh literally everythingggg. Some clients will take out extensions during rough times, yes, but I’ve seen clients with established relationships sacrifice literally every other beauty service to keep their extensions in. The quality of what you do MATTERS, and each investment you make in client experience will pay you back tenfold!
2. Invest in marketing efforts to increase awareness of your salon and its offerings. Get. Your. Salon. Out. There. Are you guilty of just throwing up a random pic of hair you did with a half assed kinda artsy caption?🙃 Don’t worry, we’ve literally allll been there babe. If you’re spending time on your marketing, make it effective! Build trust by explaining to your followers how you achieved a certain look! Convert followers to clients by running a limited time special for new clients or a high ticket service you’re looking to boost! Be intentional about your marketing, and watch it get a whole heck of a lot easier and more effective than aimlessly posting just to post!
3. Reduce unnecessary expenses and streamline operations to increase profitability. Just being real here - owning a salon can be a massive cash dump if you’re not careful. There is ALWAYS something you could be spending money on, and if you don’t carefully track your cash flow in each area of your business, it’s pretty easy for it to spiral out of control faaaast. 4. Prioritize your well being first. We all know in the event of an airplane emergency that you gotta put your own oxygen mask before helping others, and business ownership is no different. If you’re not resting, decompressing, and nourishing yourself physically and emotionally, no amount of salon success is going to make you happy. Get some time outside, take breaks from your phone, and please be good to yourself. You deserve it!!!
